7 Earth Day Activities For Kids

At this point in time, many of us are experiencing some form of sheltering in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although we are practicing safe physical distancing, we are still able to get out and appreciate God’s creation! I know that our family makes every effort to get outside DAILY for our own sanity (especially momma’s) and enjoy some fresh air. I’m excited to share with you 7 Earth Day activities for kids that you can do at home!

What is not love about getting outside and getting dirty? Plus, not to mention the joy of watching the eyes of your little ones light up when they get to explore and discover all there is to soak up in nature.

Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to focus on learning about the environment, celebrating God’s creation and spending time enjoying it!

Here are 7 Earth Day activities for kids that we have done in the past that you might like to try with your own family.

  1. Build a birdhouse or bird feeder out of recyclables

This site has some really great ideas for super easy ideas that you can try using some everyday items you might have on hand at home.

2. Take a hike and have a picnic

Get out of the house and take a walk around your neighborhood or go explore a nature trail. Pack a backpack with essentials and enjoy a picnic lunch, lay down and cloud watch to see what fun pictures you can see, subscribe below to get a FREE nature scavenger hunt you can use on your way!

3. Watch the Lorax

We absolutely love this movie and it’s perfect to incorporate into your Earth Day fun. End your day with a movie night, pop some popcorn and enjoy some downtime. Better yet, you could put up a white sheet on the side of your house or on your fence in your backyard and use this awesome projector to have a movie night under the stars.

4. Make dirt cups

Gross and yummy. What combination could be better? Your kids will love making this themed snack and it’s so easy to throw together. Use a mason jar or clear cup, start with a spoonful of chocolate pudding, then pour some crumbled Oreos and top off with gummy worms and voila! Edible dirt in a cup.

5. Read fun books

I am a huge advocate on reading aloud and just children reading in general. This book is one that we have read and love to include in our Earth Day celebrations. Usborne Books and More also has some amazing options for fun and engaging resources.

6. Plant something

You can go quick and simple with a few seeds in a small coffee can on your countertop or go all out with a full on backyard garden and anywhere in between! We have used this window garden and the boys really enjoyed the experience.

7. Use recyclables to create

Many of us have done much more online shopping than usual lately so you are likely to have a few cardboard boxes on hand. Bring them out along with all the necessities! Markers, paints, tape, stickers, the works. Throw in some empty water jugs, egg cartons, paper towel tubes, whatever you have on hand or might want to set aside for a fun project to let their imaginations run!
